Periodontics
Periodontics is the specialty of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth). Periodontists also place dental implants. In addition to treating challenging periodontal and implant cases, periodontists also provide a variety of other specialized services including, root surface debridement (in which damaged root tissue is removed), oral inflammation treatment, cosmetic periodontal procedures, biopsies of suspicious lesions and more.
Gum Grafting
A gum graft, also known as a gingival graft or periodontal plastic surgery aims to cover exposed tooth roots by transplanting healthy gum tissue from your palate or another donor source. Exposed tooth roots result from the recession of gums and bone loss.
Osseous Surgery
Osseous concerns typically involve bone loss due to periodontal disease, which is correlated to weakening tooth support. Treatments such as osseous surgery and bone grafting aim to reshape or regenerate bone to restore gum and tooth health, preventing further damage and promoting healing.
Implants
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into the jaw to hold a prosthetic tooth or bridge. However, the term “dental implants,” is more commonly known as the combination of the implant (the artificial tooth root) and the prosthetic tooth itself. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost one or more teeth due to periodontal disease, trauma, or some other reason and for those who prefer not to wear dentures.
